5th International Conference - Climate Change Education

"Joining efforts in Latin America to promote climate education action projects: connecting, disseminating learnings, and best practices."

Latin America is a highly vulnerable region to the impacts of climate change, which are already being manifested and have consequences on food security, water quality, biodiversity, public health, and groups of people migrating between countries in search of a better quality of life, among other areas. Climate change education is a key tool to address these challenges and prepare current and future generations to face a changing world. As the effects of climate change intensify, climate change education becomes increasingly important in the region, with initiatives promoted by governments, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, and civil society in general. In this context, there is a need to continue promoting spaces for dialogue and collaboration to strengthen the capacities and resources of the actors involved in climate change education in Latin America.

For this reason, the Office for Climate Education (OCE) will participate in the 5th International Conference on Climate Change Education (V CIECC) in Santiago, Chile on June 5th and 6th. This event will address the role of education in the fight against climate change in Latin America and worldwide. The conference will be attended by distinguished scientists, educators, government representatives, the STEM Latin America Network, STEM+ Territories initiatives, and Climate Change Education projects coordinators from Latin America. The conference will be combined with the annual event of our project América Latina para la Educación en Cambio Climático (ALEC). During the V CIECC, the ALEC event will include presentations on the project's objectives achieved to date by Mexican and Colombian partners. On the same occasion, the OCE will lead strategic workshops aimed at training new countries in project implementation, as well as adapting educational resources to local climate and pedagogical contexts and developing teacher training protocols.

Finally, from June 7th to 9th, the week will conclude with three full days of training workshops on climate change and active pedagogies for primary and secondary school teachers and trainers in Latin America. This will be a unique opportunity to bring together, for the first time in person, teachers from different countries (Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Chile) within the framework of the ALEC project. During this training, teachers will be able to develop their skills in teaching about climate change, share their own experiences, learn from each other, and disseminate a common and high-quality educational practice throughout the region.
